Wat Kong Kan – Mae Chaem – Chiang Mai Province, Thailand

Wat Kong Kan was built in 1431 by the rulers of Chiang Mai, Phrae and Chiang Saen. The main Buddha image in the ubosot is best representative of the Mae Chaem-style. The murals are of local life and previous incarnations of the Buddha. The back wall has a mural of the temple, its followers and the principle Buddha image. As with many Lanna-style temples, the dominant decorative colours are red and gold.

If you leave the compound and first cross a bamboo bridge, followed by a swaying suspension bridge over the Mae Chaem, you may climb up the hill beyond. There, the golden chedi site provides splendid views of the town of Mae Chaem and the rolling mountains that enclose it.
